After publishing my first post, I realized it had become too long to keep updating. That is why I created a new post focused only on the latest improvements.
You can read the original post here
If you are coming from that post, you can continue following updates here.
After launching the first version of my journal app, I wanted to keep improving it based on real usage. What started as my idea quickly evolved into something much better, thanks to Nikola Filipovski from
To be completely transparent, around 90% of the ideas and all of the development come from Nikola. I use the app daily, share feedback, and shape the direction, but he is the one who continuously improves it, builds new features, and turns ideas into something actually usable.
This update is a result of that collaboration.
Admin dashboard page restyle
The admin dashboard is now restyled with a cleaner and more informative layout.
The option to change the name has been removed from the top of the page. Instead, the header now shows my profile image and username, along with a link to the settings page.
It also includes:
* Number of published posts
* Number of draft posts
* Total views across all posts
Profile Image and Name Customization
I can now upload and change my profile image and/or name, which makes the whole experience feel more personal.
This was one of those features that seems simple, but makes a big difference in everyday use.
Admin account settings page
This is a completely new page.
Here I can:
* Change my profile image
* Update my username
* View account details such as email and role
* Sign out from all devices using the button at the bottom
Faster Post Editing
Editing posts is now significantly faster.
Nikola introduced a dedicated edit button on every post, allowing instant access to editing without unnecessary steps. This makes updating content quick and seamless.
Custom Categories
This is one of the most powerful updates so far.
I can now:
* Create/Edit my own categories
* Name them however I want
* Add descriptions
* Fully control how my content is structured
This feature was entirely driven and designed by Nikola, making the app much more flexible and practical for real use.
Homepage Category Selection
I can now choose exactly which three categories are displayed on the homepage.
This makes it possible to highlight the most important topics and keep the homepage clean and intentional.
Dedicated Categories Page
There is now a full categories page:
https://journal.nfwdesign.com/category
Each category shows the number of posts inside it, which gives a clear overview of how content is distributed.
This improves both navigation and discoverability.
Category Colors
Each category can now have its own color.
This makes it easier to visually separate topics and scan through content quickly. It is a small detail, but it improves the overall experience.
Clickable Tags
Tags are now clickable.
Clicking on a tag opens a page with all posts that share that tag. This makes browsing related content much easier and more intuitive.
All tags page
All tags page can be found at
https://journal.nfwdesign.com/tags
This is a new page that lists all tags used in the app along with the number of posts that belong to each tag.
Dedicated/Single tag page
This is also a new page.
You can reach it by clicking on any tag:
* On a single blog post
* On the all posts page
* On the homepage
Clicking a tag opens a page that lists all posts containing that tag.
Daily Mood Feature
Nikola also added a random mood post feature that appears at the bottom of the homepage.
This feature was added some time ago, but I did not mention it earlier.
This mood post changes once a day, giving the homepage a small dynamic element that refreshes regularly.
The idea behind this feature is simple but powerful. It gives older posts a chance to be seen again instead of disappearing in the archive.
Why This Update Matters
This update is a big step forward in making the journal app more usable, flexible, and structured.
I now have:
* More control over content
* Faster editing workflow
* Better organization through categories
* Easier navigation with tags
But the most important part is this.
This project would not be what it is without Nikola Filipovski.
He is not just the developer. He is the main driver behind most of the ideas, features, and improvements. I bring the use case and direction, but he builds, improves, and pushes the product forward.
If you are building something and need someone who can actually think, not just code, Nikola is the person behind this project.
More updates are coming soon so stay tuned.
